Garden Walk June 24

Six gardens open for annual walk

Owners of the gardens, all in Auburn, are:

• Matt and Rhonda DeKoninck, 1206 Phaeton Way;

• Mark and Lorrene Thiele, 743 North Main St.;

• Thom and Jama Smith, 2132 C.R. 68;

• Karen Grate, 1306 Lori Lea St.;

• Chrissy and Michael Cummins, 364 W. 5th St.;

• Kim and Matt Seevers, 701 N. Main St.

Grate has created her garden over the past 2 1/2 years, she said. It features island plots surrounded by decorative stones, including one in a hillside at the back of her property.

“It’s probably more work now than mowing, but it looks prettier,” she said.

Highlights of her garden include a variety of columbine plants, coral bells and climatis.

Although her front yard features plenty of attractive elements, the backyard is her favorite spot with its patio, covered deck and garden shed.

“You’d never know this is back here,” she said. “It’s a little paradise. It’s a lot of fun. It’s therapeutic.”

Tickets for the Garden Walk may be purchased in advance for $5 each at The Garden Gate garden center and Carbaugh Jewelers in downtown Auburn.

On the day of the walk, tickets will be sold for $6 apiece at Courtyard Park in downtown Auburn or at any of the gardens on the walk.

All proceeds from the Garden Walk support the seven-time state champion DeKalb High School show choirs.
